Five more hot tips to saving on your heating bills this winter

With over 20 years of experience in HVAC systems behind us here at Askews, it’s safe to say that over the years we’ve picked up some fantastic ways to save on your heating bills. Though we’ve actually touched upon the subject more than a few times in the past, and with winter moving rapidly in, we thought it a great time to share a few more handy tips to achieve maximum efficiency for your heating and cooling systems!

1. Choose your energy supplier carefully

This is a particularly common pitfall for new tenants of office blocks or buildings. It’s all too easy to continue using the previous energy supplier as the previous tenants, mostly for the sake of convenience. However, as with lots of things in life, it can pay to shop around a bit. You may find that other suppliers can offer you the same services at a much cheaper rate, which can potentially end up saving you significant annual costs on your energy bills.

2. Read your own energy meter regularly

It’s often in the best interests of your supplier – though not necessarily yours – to encourage you to pay an estimated bill. This involves your supplier making their best guess about how much energy you’ll use in a year, and then averaging out that sum. Ultimately, this might leave you paying far more than you need to. Instead, it’s far better for you to read your own meter, and provide them with your exact usage, so that you’re not overcharged for energy you might not necessarily be using.

3. Pay your bills online

On a related note, even the way you pay your heating bill could be costing you extra if you’re paying by cash or cheque. This costs a bit more time and effort for your energy supplier to process, so instead they much prefer you paying online. The time and manpower this saves means that they’re often able to offer you significant discounts for doing so. These discounts are usually at their largest when you’re regularly paying by direct debit, so it’s definitely something to consider!

4. Think about the layout of your office

This is amongst the lesser-known tips, which means you might be surprised at how much it ends up saving you! Your radiators can’t do the best job of heating your office if they’re blocked by furniture, so if you can, it’s a good idea to have a quick rearrange of the room’s layout. Make sure that all radiators are clear of any obstructions so that they can blast the maximum amount of heat into the room with the minimum amount of energy, easily increasing the efficiency of your HVAC systems. Plus, don’t forget to close the doors in the room wherever you can – it does a far better job of keeping all the heat in!

5. Avoid electric heaters

We won’t deny that electric heaters do a great job of heating up a room quickly, especially if it’s a smaller space. However, they use up an incredible amount of energy to do so, and this power-hungriness can end up leaving you with an unpleasant surprise at the end of the month. Therefore we’d advise not to cave to temptation by buying them for short-term gains. Investing in your building’s HVAC systems is more of a long-term solution, but the cost issue is almost a no-brainer in the long run.

We’ve got over 20 years experience of upgrading and maintaining such systems here at Askews, which makes our HVAC engineers the perfect people to ensure that your employees’ comfort and productivity both remain at peak levels throughout winter. As we start to move quickly into the colder seasons, it’s always a good plan to organise a routine service and maintenance of your systems.
