If you’ve been following our blog recently you may have seen our post on some of the most common air conditioning issues, as well as what your first courses of action should be.
Some of the most common air conditioning problems include:
Generally, it’s best to call in a professional, but their job can be faster and easier if you’ve already got a basic understanding of what the possible problem is. If you attempt to fix the problems yourself, you may well risk making the issue worse.
This is known in the air conditioning industry as ‘short cycling’. There are a number of possible causes, from faulty batteries to dirty components. Here are two major reasons why your air conditioning system might be shutting down (and what to do about it).
If the batteries are fine and the air conditioning unit isn’t regularly tripping the circuit breaker, we’d recommend calling an Askews heating and cooling engineer. Not only can the problems be delicate, but to untrained hands they might even be dangerous. If unsure, it’s always better to be on the safe side – you’ll likely save yourself a lot of money and bother in the long run.
This is another problem that’s usually caused by a number of relatively straightforward issues – though that doesn’t make them easy to tackle! For example, it can sometimes be due to leaks in the building’s ductwork supplying different rooms. This is a particularly plausible explanation if some rooms are being cooled effortlessly, while others are still like furnaces. Blocked vents and registers, or even poor insulation, are all other potential culprits.
Though it helps to be able to identify the cause before your Askews engineer arrives, don’t worry too much if you can’t exactly put your finger on the problem – that’s what we’re here for. You can always check the windows in each affected room for any gaps, to make sure there’s no warm air getting in or cooled air leaking out. If you find one, resealing these may have a drastic effect by taking the pressure off your air conditioning system.
Leaking fluid from your unit is generally an indicator of a big problem, though it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s beyond repair. The pump or condenser could be blocked or broken, or the drain hole might be obstructed by dirt or debris. If this happens, the water can easily overflow and cause a leak.
Whatever the case, once again at Askews we’d first and foremost recommend calling in a professional heating and cooling engineer, who can identify the issue and fix it with the minimum amount of fuss and hassle.
